User-Defined Visual Query Languages

چکیده

Previous research in visual query languages has fo-cused on pre-deened visual representations of data and queries, which are suitable for speciic applications, but diicult to extend and generalize. In this paper we propose a metalanguage to query an object-oriented database with user-deened pictures. By manipulating these pictures, the user can extract information about the data in a purely visual fashion. The proposed metalanguage is rule-based and uses a constraint visual language that allows for complex displays such as graphs, bar charts, pie charts, and plot charts to be speciied. Our approach extends object-oriented concepts, such as inheritance and genericity to visual query languages. We provide examples that illustrate the expressiveness of the user-deened visual languages to display and query data.

QBD * : A Fully Visual Query System

The need of a friendly man-machine interaction is becoming crucial for a large variety of applications, in particular, those requiring frequent extraction of information from the database. Experience suggests that traditional query languages are not friendly enough for the casual user: she/he is requested to formulate queries in a textual language, without any iconic or spatial clues to help th...

Query-By-Trace: Visual Predicate Specification in Spatio-Temporal Databases

In this paper we propose a visual interface for the specification of predicates to be used in queries on spatio-temporal databases. The approach is based on a visual specification method for temporally changing spatial situations. This extends existing concepts for visual spatial query languages, which are only capable of querying static spatial situations. We outline a preliminary user interfa...

Modeling users’ navigation history

A lot of recent research has focused on methods of modeling Web users and on efficient ways to initialize and manage user models. In this paper, we present a new user modeling technique relying on a temporal, graph-based data model for semistructured information. Our technique can be used to filter WWW information and to make the Web experience personalized for the individual user. Moreover, su...
